About us
Zambia Civic Education Association is a human rights non-governmental, not for profit making organisation registered in 1993 under the Registrar of Societies Act in Zambia. The organisation was founded on with the aim of empowering the Zambian citizenry within the context of the then new democratic dispensation
Our History
Zambia Civic Education Association (ZCEA) was established in September 1993 by three lawyers: Lucy Banda Sichone, Christine Kunda and Elias Chipimo Jr. ZCEA was founded at a time when civil society organisations were emerging in Zambia, with a vision of empowering citizens to understand and exercise their rights and responsibilities and contribute to the country’s democratic development.
From its inception, ZCEA focused on human rights, governance and democratic issues. In 2002, the organisation broadened its focus to children’s rights, guided by international and regional human rights instruments, including the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
Over the years, ZCEA has contributed to the promotion and protection of human rights through civic education, capacity building, information dissemination, awareness raising, policy analysis, research, advocacy, coalition building and engagement with policy makers.
Today, ZCEA continues to work towards a society where fundamental rights are respected, children are protected and empowered, and citizens actively participate in decisions that affect their lives.
